In cooperation with the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the workshop draws on advanced semantic analysis of global scientific trends and regional innovation portfolios. Contrary to conventional competitiveness metrics, ESPON will show how lagging regions can accelerate towards emerging global domains. The workshop addresses debates on trade-offs between competitiveness and cohesion, presenting evidence that regional development is not a liability but a source of Europe’s long-term competitiveness: public-sector actors in lagging regions tap into competitive networks and help broker Europe’s increasing industrial presence in globally emerging domains.
