The Local Councils’ Association of Malta represents all 68 local councils and six regional councils in Malta. For the first time, it will take an active role in the European Week of Regions and Cities, showcasing local projects and building new partnerships. The stand will present practical initiatives that improve quality of life in island communities, with a focus on women in leadership, and the empowerment of children and young people. The Association has long been active at European level and looks forward to sharing its experience, exchanging ideas, and connecting with regions and cities across Europe.

Session summary
The Local Councils’ Association (LCA) of Malta was proud to participate in the European Week of Regions and Cities in Brussels, providing an excellent opportunity to showcase our vision, initiatives and commitment to strengthening local democracy.
Through our stand, “Island Communities in Action,” we disseminated several publications and practical guidelines reflecting the Association’s vision of “Residents First – Better Quality of Life,” particularly focusing on key pillars such as Open Spaces, Sustainable Mobility and more sustainable, inclusive communities.
We also showcased “Rillu u Merillu,” our storytelling and activity book designed to introduce children to local democracy, local governance and active citizenship in an engaging and educational way.
Our participation provided a valuable platform to exchange good practices, build European partnerships and demonstrate how Malta’s local councils are contributing to stronger, more resilient and citizen-centred communities.
Our message remains clear: local democracy begins with informed, engaged and empowered communities, including our youngest citizens.
