European Week of Regions and Cities

I’d Stay – But How? Housing and the Future of Young People in Harghita County

The event will address affordable housing as a key condition for the right to stay in rural and mountain regions. Using Harghita County as a case study, the local dialogue will bring together young people, youth organisations, elected representatives, young families, employers and local experts for an open and moderated discussion on housing and youth retention. The central question will be what conditions are needed for young people to be able and willing to build their future in Harghita County. The discussion will address affordable rental housing, access to housing for young families, housing for teachers, healthcare professionals and other essential workers, as well as the role of municipalities and EU policies. Particular attention will be given to the specific challenges of rural and mountain areas. The event will conclude by identifying a small number of concrete priorities that can be promoted at local, national and European level.
