Engaging rural communities in the energy transition: social participation models for renewable energy projects

Rural areas play a crucial role in Europe’s energy transition, yet renewable energy projects often face resistance due to limited social engagement and lack of trust. Strengthening citizen participation is essential to ensure an effective and socially inclusive transition. This event will bring together regional authorities, policymakers, energy agencies, local stakeholders and European experts to explore ways of increasing public participation and improving acceptance of renewable energy projects in rural areas. The programme will combine regional presentations and a stakeholder roundtable, creating a space for peer learning and discussion. Participants will have the opportunity to exchange experiences, identify common challenges and discuss solutions to strengthen citizen participation and social acceptance of renewable energy projects in rural areas. Dedicated networking opportunities before and after the event will further support cooperation among regions and stakeholders. The event builds on the experience of SIRENERGY, an Interreg Europe project supporting public authorities across Europe in developing better policies for renewable energy projects. By showcasing lessons learned from different European regions, the event will promote peer learning, cooperation and knowledge exchange.
