This workshop explores how small and medium-sized cities can lead impactful citizen engagement to support environmental transitions, contributing to the EURegionsWeek 2026 motto: “Strong regions, strong Europe.” Through concrete examples from European Green Leaf-winning cities, the session will showcase how participatory approaches can strengthen local democracy and trust, improve environmental outcomes and eable place-based solutions tailored to local needs, granting territorial cohesion and the right to stay. Vaasa (Finland) and Águeda (Portugal) were awarded the European Green Leaf Award title for 2026, while Gabrovo (Bulgaria) received the award for 2021.
